Chrysler is recalling more than 265,000 Ram cargo vans over an issue with the vehicles' steering system, according to federal regulators.
About 265,512 Ram ProMaster vans with model years from 2022-2026 are affected by the recall, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in its recall notice.
The recall impacts various van models, including 44,391 Ram 1500 ProMasters, 147,204 Ram 2500 ProMasters and 72,043 Ram 3500 ProMasters with model years from 2022-2026, as well as 1,874 Ram 3500 EV ProMasters with model years from 2024-2026.

The defect can cause water to enter the vehicles' electric power steering wiring harness, potentially damaging the wiring and causing drivers to lose power steering assistance.
Drivers may receive no warning before losing power steering assistance, according to the NHTSA.

The NHTSA warned that damage to the steering system can increase the risk of a crash.
Stellantis NV, the maker of the vans, is aware of one non-injury accident linked to the problem, Stellantis spokesperson Frank Matyok said in a statement to The Detroit News.

To resolve the issue, dealers will inspect and replace the wiring harness and electronic power steering gear, if needed, free of charge.
Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed out on November 17. Additional letters will be sent out once the final remedy is available.
